The Session is the council of the congregation composed of those duly elected by the congregation to active service. “The Session has the responsibility for governing the congregation and guiding its witness to the sovereign activity of God in the world, so that the congregation is and becomes a community of faith, hope, love, and witness” (Book of Order:G-3.0201). In doing so, the Session strives to meet the great Ends of the Church, which are:
“The proclamation of the Gospel for the salvation of humankind;
The shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God;
The maintenance of divine worship;
The preservation of the truth;
The promotion of social righteousness; and
The exhibition of the kingdom of heaven to the world” (Book of Order F-1.0304).
Further, Vanport Presbyterian Church is unicameral in governance, which means that the duly elected Ruling Elders who serve on the Session are also the Trustees of the Corporation, as required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Deacons are responsible for visitation, sending cards, providing transportation, and being there for those who need someone to listen. They provide bereavement dinners after funeral services, meals for those in need of help, and the desserts for Meals on Wheels. Communion is a main responsibility; Deacons bake the bread, provide the juice, and set up and clean up. They also arrange for Ushers and Greeters for each service of worship.

The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to spend time in prayer and reflection to discern who the Lord is calling to serve His church as Ruling Elder or Deacon. Further, working with the Christian Education and Worship Committee, the discernment process extends to educational staff, including Church School Teachers and Youth Leaders. They also provide thanks and appreciation events for members for their years of service.

Christian Education & Worship Committee
The Christian Education & Worship Committee is responsible for many things concerned with youth activities, Bible studies, and worship services, including the opening exercises and scheduling the first and last day of Sunday School. They decorate the Sanctuary periodically throughout the year to reflect the time of year or liturgical season, gather worship assistants, handle Children’s Time during Advent and Lent, and schedule Communion dates and servers for the year. They recognize youth attendance present Bibles to youth in 4th grade. Above all else, they are dedicated to promoting God’s great love and purpose to the youth and adults of Vanport Presbyterian Church.

The purpose of the Finance Committee is to provide fiduciary guidance that will facilitate the church’s mission and ministry. They oversee all VPC actions and make recommendations to the Session; their accountability is to the Session. They review operating costs and revenue opportunities to prepare the annual budget.

The purpose of Fellowship is to bring honor and glory to God by providing hospitality for the community of faith and guests. The committee provides a warm and welcoming environment to those who attend the special events that are planned throughout the year. Specific responsibilities include Lenten soup luncheons, new member classes and reception, Pastor Appreciation Day, and overseeing the Sunday fellowship time, which has been given to a different committee each month.

Missional Church Committee
The Missional Church Committee is responsible for discerning where God is calling the VPC into mission and ministry. Following the process of dwelling in the word and discernment, community involvement, and evangelism, the committee works to proclaim the Good News of God’s love in Jesus Christ. This process requires community involvement and the education of the church community in looking beyond the walls of the church to serve the Lord. We periodically sponsor and/or provide help for events both in the church and outside the church.

Mission Interpretation & Stewardship Committee
The Mission Interpretation & Stewardship Committee is responsible for interpreting the mission and ministry of the local church as well as the mission of the larger church in the world. This responsibility includes the encouragement of the congregation to support the ministry and mission of the church of Jesus Christ with their talents, abilities, resources, and time. The committee further oversee the organization and distribution of special offerings, such as One Great Hour of Sharing, the Christmas Joy Offering, and Souper Bowl Sunday. They also prepare our envelopes for giving and distribution in the church.

Music Outreach Committee
Music Outreach is a new committee that focuses on creating community events involving music. We hope to start caroling, holding, hosting, and/or providing concerts. We are going to use this committee as a way to reach outside our church through music.

The property committee controls all aspects pertaining to the maintenance and improvements of the physical structures and equipment owned by Vanport Presbystian Church (VPC). The committee is responsible for reporting its actions to the governing body of VPC, Session. It is charged with meeting or exceeding expectations to provide an environment that is safe and suitable for the current congregation. This includes abiding by all codes and safe regulations of the facility as defined by the State governments and local municipalities. Additionally, it is the management body of the janitorial personnel.

The functions of the Personnel Committee include drafting and/or revising personnel policies for Session approval, reviewing job descriptions, establishing a salary structure, and annually reviewing staff salaries, and reviewing the benefits package. The Personnel Committee also acts as a grievance board for employee complaints. The Personnel Committee is responsible to the hiring and the firing of staff members, excluding the Pastor. The committee should formulate equitable and appropriate policies guiding the engagement, behavior, and employment of professional and administrative staff members.

Youth Ministry Committee
The Youth Ministry Committee organizes the youth group and also holds other special youth activities, including providing lesson materials and snacks for weekly meetings. We try and find games for the members to play as ice breakers and to facilitate fellowship. They also help youth going to Camp Lambec, providing information and helping with transportation and/or scholarships.
